About BMS

Our History

Born from the resilience and visionary spirit of a newly independent nation, the Bangladesh Mathematical Society (BMS) was established in 1972, just one year after Bangladesh emerged sovereign following the 1971 Liberation War. Recognizing that the intellectual and scientific advancement of the country was paramount to its rebuilding, a dedicated group of reputed mathematicians united to form the Society.

This initiative was spearheaded by the eminent Prof. Dr. S. M. Azizul Haque, the then Head of the Department of Mathematics at Dhaka University. Under his leadership, an ad-hoc committee was formed to lay the foundation, with Prof. Haque serving as the founding President and Dr. Sheikh Sohrabuddin acting as the Convener. Together, they drafted the Society's first constitution in 1972, which was officially ratified during the inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) in 1974.

That same year, a complete Executive Committee for the 1973-1974 term was elected, establishing a democratic tradition that has endured for decades. Today, the rigorous process of electing a new Executive Committee every two years remains a hallmark of the Society, ensuring dynamic leadership and continuous evolution.

Mission & Vision

Our Vision: To establish Bangladesh as a premier global hub for mathematical excellence, where the profound power of mathematics is harnessed to drive technological innovation, solve complex societal challenges, and inspire a more rational, analytical, and enlightened society.

Our Mission: The Bangladesh Mathematical Society is driven by a multifaceted mission to elevate the standard of mathematical sciences across the nation:

  • Cultivate Excellence: To champion and support high-quality, rigorous research and innovative teaching methodologies across all tiers of the education system, from primary classrooms to postgraduate research labs.

  • Bridge the Gap: To serve as a vital conduit between theoretical mathematicians and applied professionals in fields such as technology, finance, data science, and engineering, translating abstract concepts into real-world solutions.

  • Empower Youth: To actively identify, mentor, and elevate young mathematical prodigies through highly competitive platforms, scholarships, and dedicated mentorship programs.

  • Global Integration: To maintain a robust and active presence within the international scientific community by fostering exchange programs, facilitating joint research initiatives, and representing Bangladesh on the global mathematical stage.

Key Initiatives

The BMS actively works to demystify mathematics, making it accessible, engaging, and impactful through several foundational pillars:

1. The Biennial International Mathematics Conference

As the largest gathering of mathematical minds in the country, the International Mathematical Conference is a cornerstone of the Society's academic calendar.

  • Global Confluence: Hosted every two years, this prestigious event bridges the local academic community with the global stage. It attracts world-renowned mathematicians, expatriate Bangladeshi researchers, and international scholars.

  • Diverse Discourse: The conference features a dynamic itinerary of plenary lectures, invited talks, and parallel technical sessions. Topics span a vast spectrum, ranging from foundational theories in Pure Analysis, Topology, and Algebra to cutting-edge applications in Fluid Dynamics, Mathematical Biology, Cryptography, and Artificial Intelligence.

  • Networking & Collaboration: It provides an invaluable platform for early-career researchers and PhD candidates to present their findings, receive constructive feedback from global experts, and forge collaborative partnerships that transcend borders.

2. The AFMRF-BMS National Mathematics Conference

As the premier domestic gathering of mathematical scholars and students, the AFMRF-BMS National Mathematics Conference is a vital initiative in fostering and elevating the nation's academic landscape.

  • Nationwide Confluence: Organized through the proud collaboration of the A F Mujibur Rahman Foundation and the Bangladesh Mathematical Society, this pivotal event unites the country's mathematical community. It draws together esteemed professors, dedicated researchers, and passionate educators from universities and institutions across all regions of Bangladesh.

  • Comprehensive Discourse: The conference offers a robust academic program featuring keynote addresses, invited lectures, and dedicated technical sessions. Presentations cover a broad spectrum of the mathematical sciences, exploring classical foundations in Differential Equations, Geometry, and Number Theory, alongside vital applied fields such as Computational Mathematics, Operations Research, and Mathematical Physics.

  • Empowering Future Leaders: Serving as a crucial incubator for homegrown talent, the conference provides a supportive platform for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students to showcase their research. It facilitates meaningful mentorship, allowing emerging scholars to engage with seasoned academics, exchange innovative ideas, and build a strong, collaborative national network.

3. The National Undergraduate Math Olympiad (NUMO)

Recognized as the premier intellectual battleground for university-level students in Bangladesh, the National Undergraduate Math Olympiad is designed to spark a fierce but healthy competitive spirit.

  • Structure & Reach: Organized in collaboration with esteemed philanthropic partners (such as the A. F. Mujibur Rahman Foundation) and leading academic institutions, the Olympiad is structured in multiple tiers. It begins with rigorous regional rounds held across various divisions of Bangladesh, culminating in a grand national finale.

  • Curriculum & Challenge: The competition challenges students beyond their standard coursework, testing their limits in advanced calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, number theory, and complex problem-solving.

  • Impact: Beyond awarding medals and certificates, the Olympiad serves as a critical talent pipeline. It discovers the next generation of researchers, connects them with leading academicians, and often opens doors to international scholarships and higher studies.

4. Publications: GANIT (Journal of Bangladesh Mathematical Society)

Ganit (the Bengali word for mathematics) is the flagship, peer-reviewed journal published by the Society, acting as a testament to the nation's academic output.

  • Scope & Rigor: The journal publishes original research articles, short communications, and comprehensive review papers encompassing all branches of Pure and Applied Mathematics. It operates under a strict double-blind peer-review process to ensure the highest standards of academic integrity and scientific rigor.

  • A Global Platform: GANIT is designed to showcase the intellectual breakthroughs of both local scholars and international contributors. It serves as a critical repository of knowledge, allowing Bangladeshi researchers to contribute meaningfully to global mathematical literature while maintaining a platform that is accessible to the broader academic community.

5. Teacher Training & Workshops

The BMS operates on the philosophy that great mathematicians are built by great teachers.

  • Pedagogical Advancement: To ensure educators are equipped with the best tools, the Society regularly conducts intensive workshops and training camps for math teachers at the school, college, and university levels.

  • Modern Integration: These sessions focus on updating pedagogical techniques, moving away from rote memorization toward concept-based learning. Furthermore, the workshops train educators on the integration of modern technological tools and mathematical software (like MATLAB, Mathematica, and Python) into their daily curriculum.

6. Policy Advocacy & National Development

Beyond academia, the BMS acts as a crucial advisory body to the government and educational policymakers.

  • STEM Strategy: The Society provides expert counsel to the Ministry of Education regarding curriculum development, ensuring that the national syllabus remains globally competitive.

  • Strategic Growth: By advocating for increased research funding and highlighting the critical role of mathematics in national development, the BMS actively shapes the country's broader STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) strategy, preparing Bangladesh for the challenges of the 21st century.
